So you think most Chinese postdocs are speaking terrific English? Why can't
postdocs considerate language training? My spoken is not too bad (my students
thought I grew up in the states although I think they were flattering me), but
I think I need to polish my spoken all the time, probably for the rest of my
life as long as I need to work in English. Looks like it's a shame for many
people to admit that their spoken is still not fluent enough, but I don't feel
shame to do so.
For most postdocs, lab is the main place where they spend their working time.
Sure you can communicate with your labmates, but as much as I know, most
people in most Chinese faculty's labs are Chinese and other international
people (of course exceptions always exist, and don't argue with me about
exceptions) even if the faculty is good at research. So obviously it's not
beneficial for a Chinese to practice spoken. Do you expect them to talk to
other people in other labs during or after work? I doubt how many people can
really accomplish that. So choosing a Chinese boss to a big degree means
choosing no big progress in spoken.
Of course, if most Chinese postdocs are speaking English well, then forget
about what I said. Period.
