A protein long thought to inhibit the growth of regenerating nerve axons
has at last been identified and cloned. This discovery could be an important
step towards promoting nerve regeneration after stroke or spinal-cord
injury.

Why don't adult axons regenerate?
The reason is strongly inhibitory myelin proteins. This has been known
for nearly a hundred years.
