i am not familiar with these two. i think ethology is more direct, it is
behavioral study of animal in its natural environment. for example, you
might do some in-site observation to study how antelopes navigate in
central africa area and setup a pattern using statistical data. neoroscience
seems to be popular in recent years, and it would apply molecular and
genetic tools to study animal's behavior.for example, it will investigate
the development of some neuron sensor that is critical to control the
behavior of the animal. it will study the neurotransmitter/gene/signal
transduction/cell fate that all combine to determine a specific behavioral
pattern. so it is more profound, and it requires more effort, though it can
digest and address the question in more details, it might neglect some
apparent and crucial phenonmena. ethology is more direct, and it can help
understand the whole thing systematically, but the drawback is that it
cannot solve the problem thoroughly.

: another basic question, //blush
: ethology is the study of behavior, but neuroscience
: can also be used to study behavior from the neuron
: level. I know ethology seems more concentrated on the
: relationship and/or interaction among the behaviors,
: but what are the advantages and disadvantages for
: the studies of ethology and neuroscience, especially
: when these two are compared together?
