It seems that most ppl would like to category bioinformatics
to CS, though it is definitely true that it depends quite
much upon implementation using computational methods. However,
I would rather regard bioinformatics more as biology. If you
take a look at all the programs, from BLAST, PSI-BLAST, GeneScan,
or some sort of promoter prediction programs, you will see
that coding with dynamic programming is pretty easy, compared
with all the research on algorithm.I think most of the really
excellent bioinformatics are not computer guys, since they
only know how to write code. On the contrary, if you would like
to be a true bioinformatics, not led by other ppl, you have to
have extensive background in molecular evolution, phylogenetics,
and molecular biology as well. If you know much about the current
progress of genome project, you will sense that in the coming
future there are many new bioinfo companies, the same as those
dotcoms, emerging out. but i think many of them will last for
a while, then disappear. The big ones will have separate section
for research on gene structure, sequence aligment and function
prediction, or they will cooperate with any cool institute on it.
If you do not wish just to be a programmer, you have to learn
sth else. Or if you just want money, easy, learn Java and database.
