official definition from textbook:
genes sharing common ancestry are called homologs.
if genes are homologs and there's no evidence of gene duplication, they're
called othologs.
if there is evidence of gene duplication, genes derived from one copy of the
duplicate are also called othologs.
Genes derived from two respective copies of the duplicate are called paralogs.
