Dr. Jan is also Jack and DeLoris Lange Professor of Molecular Physiology at
the University of California, San Francisco. He entered the California Insti
tute of Technology to study theoretical physics but instead became intereste
d in biology and received his Ph.D. degree in biophysics and physics. As a g
raduate student, he studied sensory transduction of the fungus Phycomyces wi
th Max Delbrück. Dr. Jan began studying the nervous system during postdocto
ral research with Seymour Benzer at Caltech and later with Stephen Kuffler a
t Harvard Medical School. Dr. Jan is a member of the National Academy of Sci
ences.

s at the University of California, San Francisco. During her graduate study
at the California Institute of Technology with Jean Paul Revel and Max Delbr
ück, Dr. Jan localized the visual pigment rhodopsin at the ultrastructural
level. Because she studied theoretical high-energy physics before becoming a
biology student, her Ph.D. degree was in physics and biophysics. She stayed
at CalTech to do postdoctoral research with Seymour Benzer and began to col
laborate with her husband, Yuh Nung Jan. Their first collaboration resulted
in the identification of the Shaker locus as a potential structural gene for
a potassium channel. Before accepting faculty appointments at UCSF, the Jan
s worked in Stephen Kuffler's laboratory at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Jan
is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
