Pedigree is the most important thing is scientific field.
for phD students, it is not critical yet. but for postdocs looking for faculty
positions, big PI is more important than Cell/Nature/Science paper.
remember the mm faculty in MIT from Roger Tsjen's lab? she was discussed on
this board a while ago. her publication was so so, not even close to the
publications by the 2 previous grad students from our lab. but still, she is a
faculty and my ShiXiong are still postdocs.
let's put it this way. science is pure, based purely on the quality of the
research. however, when it comes to jobs or money (funding), there are
business issues. even the scientists will have to sell/promote themselves in
any possible ways. although the competition on jobs/money in scientific field
is less profit-driven than other fields because true scientists are people
with high integrity and ethicality, it is still, inevitably, contaminated with
the bad things from the outside money-driven society. ivory tower is, thus,
not impeccable.
