??? why I got a different understanding about?

it is because the arrange of the base such that the phosphate backbone are
spaced unevenly, thus, on one side, they are closer, on another side, they
are farther apart. and that's why major and minor.

I can't imagine your way of explanation...

the groove are hydrophobic region, where a lot of protein-DNA binding occurs.
