For detail, read Nature 419:334 (2002)
While a short time ago there was this depute about the credibility
of certain people in China who declared that he had obtained
progress toward final cloning of human organs, now the truth
is that virtually many scientist have started the work using
stem cells derived from human embryos, and more shocking is
that some of them have already put effort into clinical trials in China.
Most of them got training in the US and then established their
own labs with grants from central Chinese government or local
municipal government. You may still remember the criticism on
ACT from Worcester that released their progress on cloning
human embryos to the public media last year. But our peer in
China is working hard and silently toward something unpredictable.
There is criticism that China lacks a team of interdiscplinary
cooperations and thus make the current work doubtful, which I
agree. However, given the fact that international collaboration
could be conducted to certain degree under the regulation of
respective country, the Chinese scientist may make great progress
very soon. Actually, some of their work has got high acknowledgement
from scientists in the US.
