This paper on last week's Science is pretty fabulous.
"Gene expression during the life cycle of Drosophila" Science
297:2270. As a collaboration work between several labs, the
authors tried to address the expression profile of genes
during the development of drosophila using microarray tech.
They analyzed RNA collected from different developmental stages
on microarray chips that contained about 1/3 of predicted
genes (i.e., 4028 genes on the chip). And as a control, RNA
from different stages were pooled. Primarily, the data showed
that many genes exhibited at least 4-fold difference of
expression during development. And most genes that have similar
functions tend to express at the same time, for example, during
transition from embryo to larva, from larva to pupa. And
meanwhile, they have identified clusters of coexpressed
tissue-specific as well as sex-enriched genes. This work is
an intial step to understand the complete genetic network
underlying the complex developmental process in the fruit fly.
