I have been reading recent publications of stem cell research
on Nature and Science. Such topic is pretty hot, even data
that could not replicate the previous published resulst was
accepted on such top class journals. refer to Science 298:361
and related publications from that issue.
The most important finding is turnover of the dogma "terminal
differentiation" that states the differentiation state for most
cells are unchangeable. However, the fact is that more and more
stem cells other than embryonic stem (ES) cells have been found
in different tissues, including pancreas, bone marrow and brain.
Thus, it raises an interesting question of the plasticity of the
differentiated cells and how these cells could be
"transdifferentiated" from one cell type to another. Recent
findings have also suggested that cell fusion with the ES cells
can lead to such change, and questioned whether it is really
"transdifferentiation" or it is result of cell fusion.
