Sure. The crucial thing is you have a place to do research, institutional
support etc.
Typically they apply for R03 for the first time or one of those K grants that
are for first time applicants. You can apply for R01 but not likely to get it
first time unless you have funding record. Again those K grants have kind of a
"training" component so that's why they require green card.
I think you should mentally plan for 3-5 years of postdoc. :)
I think you should seriously think about Helen Hay Whitney postdoc fellowship
or
Damyon Cancer postdoc fellowship. I didn't get one unfortunately. :( The
chances are kind of low (about 5-6% they say), but you might have better luck.
:) If you get that, then in two years apply for a Bouroughs Welcome career
development fellowship and you will be all set. Those fellowships are not too
much of a hassle to apply. It took me about 2 days to write up the
application, while the NRSA fellowship took me like 2 weeks. A R01 would take
about 1-2 months full time.

: : : Also BTW, I wonder how many people here are considering an academia
position
: : : in the short term (1-3 years). If we have serveral people, we can set up
a
