I don't know much about pharmacology but I study neuroscience. I think
Synaptic Transmission is far from being figured out. So there is still a lot
to do there and it is certainly the forefront. There is also a lot to do about
how certain channels are expressed in certain cells. How do the neuron know
how to choose a certian combination of channels to express, how are channels
targeted. Also a lot to do about how channels are modified during plasticity.
I think the hot thing is to combine with molecular biology. The other
direction is to link up things at the synapse/cell level with behavior. But
this is very hard at this stage.
Also, you will probably learn patch clamp for pharmacology stuff which is one
of the workhorse of neuroscience. It will not be a problem at all.
For PhD, you want a good project that will let you learn the major techniques
that will be important in the field.
