of course those plasmids will produce enough hiv particles. like the classic
pNL4-3 WT. but for a lot of reasons, either bio-safty or their application,
people tend to use plasmids with partial defective HIV genome, such as Rev-
Tat-, Env- etc. then supply the corresponding plasmid encoding Rev, Tat, Env or
sometimes VSV G coat protein to fully rescure HIV replication and make infectious
HIV viral particles. although those virions are fully infectious they by themselve
will not produce infectious next generation particles coz they contain defective
genome. thus you'll be sure only one infection happens and it's much safer than
working with wild type.
