here are my thoughts on surviving in academia
0. choose the field that is right for you! That probably is the most
important yet difficult thing to determine.
1. choose an advisor that fits you - if you are independent, choose
someone who does not 'over-mentor' you. If you are not independent or
do not have a solid background, choose someone that can give you lots
of attention (writing, giving presentation, project design, etc).
2. if your Ph.D. advisor is not the kind of person who is not a prominent
scientist, you most likely need to do a postdoc. Choose someone who is
prominent AND whose students/postdocs have a good track record to secure
a faculty position.
3. Be as independent as you can (esp. in your later Ph.D. period and postdoc
),
you will need to develop your own idea eventually. Develop your own ideas,
try to write your own research proposals (even you are not eligible for PI y
et).
4. You should come up with 20 most influential scientists in your field and
know
what they have done/are working on within a couple of minutes. If you cannot
, you
probably do not know your field enough.
5. Follow the literature,
a. follow at least 5-10 journals regularly
b. set up your automatic search for subjects most relevant to you.
6. Start collaborating with other professors as early as possible. You will
develop
experience in collaboration, and your name can be spread through your collab
orators.
7. (for non-native speakers), practise your talks well!!!
8. Focus more on paper quality rather than quantity. I think 3 high-quality
papers
are more than enough to secure a faculty position in a top-notch school, pro
vided you
have all other right stuffs mentioned above. A long list of low-quality pape
r and non-
first author papers might be a negative thing in some people's eyes.
