I wrote the proposal several months before I joined the new lab. I spent a
good of ~2-3 weeks working on the proposal. The first one to two weeks is
just hard thinking on what I want to propose and extensive reading. Try to
think big. Come up with important Q to ask and then think about what specific
approaches to use to answer the Q. An attractive title is very important.
For example, I see sb from Arkin lab has a title "Synthetic Biology with
temporal pathways". I think this is a very sexy title, make me eager to read
this person's proposal. And he got the DDCR award this year as well. But
write small, if you only propose big&exciting topic, but not limit your Qs to
some specific Qs and approaches, it's not a good proposal either. I spent a
whole day to come up with my 1st draft. I sent it to my current PI and she
made some general comments and grammer correction. I made a 2nd version based
on her general comments. After back and forth four times, she think my
proposal is in very good shape. I sent my 2nd last version to my Ph.D. advisor
and a couple of friends to read as well, just to make sure there is no big
problems.
