This is actually not true. For a postdoc, sometimes you just need a couple
words from a big niu boss. From the bosses I worked with, I learned an immense
amount. It's just the way they approach problems, there is no way to learn
from other people. Sometimes you don't need personal attention, I learned
plenty from just attending group meetings. I go to boss and say I did this and
this, he would sometimes just say, go do it again, there is no way this could
be right. You know what, most of the time, he is right and you have to figure
out what lead to his judgement. You learn a lot this way.

But I agree with you that, for graduate school, small lab and niu boss is the
best. But I actually really hated it in the beginning because my boss paid too
much attention to me and always wanted to tell me what to do. I was quite
unhappy. Fortunately he was a very nice guy and just said, alright, you do
whatever you are interested in. Then things got better from there. :) Looking
back, I think I probably did the wrong thing and wasted a whole year as a
result.

This I totally agree. Phone calls from the boss counts more than even first
author nature papers.
