Your boss is right. I have been on both sides of this now. Team leader in
company is also a tough job. The worst is when your project gets cut by the
company. It is especially true in biotech companies. But it goes through
cycles, when economy is good, everybody's life is easier, when economy is bad,
life is tough. Big pharmaceutical companies are a bit better but this is also
true. I think the best deal is research insitutions of big pharmaceutical
companies. The downside there is you don't get to do what interests you and
you are likely first cut when economy is bad. But this never beats a tenured
professor position, provided that you could get tenure. So in academica, it's
first tough then easy. In industry, it's more distributed. Now you get to pick
