Also negative result on visual system it seems. Victor Lamme showed that
foreground and background separation is not likely done by synchronization.
I think binding by oscillation is dead. I think oscillation and temporal code
is used by as a "fine rate code". The clear example is hippocampal theta
oscillation and place cell. Phase code there gives similar information as rate
code but with better precision.
I think the possibility that oscillation and synchronization is used for
convenient computation but not neccessarily coding however is still not
investigated well and remains a very interesting area, i.e. the synfire chain
idea. It's just that nobody is able to prove it conclusively experimentally
yet and nobody has come up with really detailed theoretical account of how it
might work. I am working on it and a bit ashamed that I still can't crack it.
