For the AP, the good thing is he will be more pushing and hands on, so you
might learn more stuff and produce more papers. However, for big labs, you can
learn even more things by discussing with other people in the lab, and at the
same time get excellent ideas and vision from the boss.
You need to be very careful with AP's funding, if he doesn't have enough money
to test your idea...
Also, Do most of CNS papers come from his post-doc? A lot of AP came from top
labs and had very good publication there. However, after they became a PI by
themself, they don't produce as much.
To get a faculty job, CNS paper is far from enough. You need to have a project
significant enough and making a good story. Moreover, lots of AP don't want
their post-doc to take the project with them.
Big boss has more connections both in terms of job search (academic or
industrial) and getting papers published in high profile journal.
You need to arrange a very careful interview with them. For the junior one,
it's a little risky so you need to make sure he has not funding problems
within 3-5 ys with fairly good amount also. For big boss, pay attention to
other people in his lab and how did the past members end up.
I think the best thing is to have a joint post-doc, one with junior PI and one
with senior PI.
