Pesonally, I think it is not a easy job. And it seems there is no certain
criteria for that. You know, many of the work by Xiaodong Wang were done on
HeLa cells. Why do they use this cell line? Is it because that it is easy to
maitain, or it has good morphology? I do not know. But the results based on
HeLa cells may not apply to other cells or cells in vivo. And lots of paper
(especially in just-so-so journals) give u the impression that the results
from one or two cell lines hold true for most cells. The following is my
suggestion
1. If u just wanna study certain cells, such as neuron or glia, it will be
easy to choose. U can try primary culture of these cells or the neuroblastoma
or glioma (?) cells such as N2a and PC12.
2. If ur research foucses on cetain proteins or signalling pathway and it
seems not tissue-specific, u will have many choices. People generally use
transformed cell for this kind of research (such as HeLa, or 293 T for
transfection). And you know most cells lines are transformed. If possilbe, u
many try to use 4 or 5 cell lines to strengthen ur results.
