Different journals have their own latex style file, which you can download.
They define the styles specific to the corresponding journal, which make it
very convenient for authors. I think they may also have style files for word.
I never used word.
The treatment of references, figures, and tables is one of the many great
things in latex. You do not need to worry about the indexing and placing of
them. Sometimes, you do have trouble, since nothing is perfect. I dont know
whether you can link to ncbi website directly through latex. Maybe someone
already wrote some package for it. You can specify the bibliography style for
different journals.
