It depends, I have one application get respond after a week, which is not to
me, but to my reference. I have one application never get back to me, later i
met him at a small meeting, he said "ah, too many emails, sorry, i will go
back and check and maybe invite you for a talk". hehe, because I already got a
job offer, so I corrected his excuse right away, say, I mailed to you my
application, not email! hehe.

Most of these PIs are very busy, good PIs get about a hundred application
emails. If they are not having any opennings, they wont look at it at all.

These being said, two suggestions:
1. if possible, meet them in person, better at a meeting or conference,
chances increase multi-fold;
2. alway cc email to the pi's secretory or the department secretory who is in
charge of postdoc application (if there are such personel available)

Add oil!
