First, if you can get into a big name lab and you are independent, that is
perfect. However, you can still be successful in a good lab even thought the
boss is not that famous (HHMI or academy member). The most important thing of
selecting postdoc lab is that you can do whatever you like (in the same
direction of the lab, of course) and you have enough money to carry out your
experiments. Then it is up to you how to succeed. I graduated from a very
small lab and my postdoc advisor is not big name. I have no CNS research
papers. But I can still find a faculty position in a top 5 medical school.

Be optimistic and be persistent are the keys.
