I applied four postdoc fellowships, and got one of them. Because the research
I am doing is very basic, so it can be linked to many diseases status, such as
leukemia, Huntington, heart diseases, et al. But they are all weak links.
Some critics I got is that the research is too fundamental, not direct
application. You just need to keep on trying, if you are lucky enough, you
will get one. A fellow in my lab applied eight fellowships, finally he got one
.
I don't have green card either, and I have to say that our choices are very
limited. If your research link to cancer, you have some chance in DOD. If it
links to heart, try American heart association.
Another pain in the ass is the recommendation letter, you have to ask your
reference people to send out letters again and again for all fellowships. So a
good relationship with your mentor and other professors is a key to success.
