Depends on which category you are applying on. For EB1a (alient w/
extraordinary ability), the bar is very high. Most of the professional
membership in bioscience field do not count. You probably have to be in the
academy of XXXX. But for EB1b (outstanding researcher) and National Interest
Waiver (NIW), USCIS is not very strict on the membership. For example, ASCB
requires at least one reference to join, ASBMB requires at least one
publication and a reference. These memberships are not solely money based. I
had these two when I was applying for NIW and USCIS did not challenge that.
However when I used the same memberships to apply for EB1a, they did challenge
them. But make sure you join the regular membership instead of student or
postdoc membership--this is the time you should not save money.
