to my opinion, I won't expect that unevoked activity of cortical networks will
show some clear patterns rather than firing totally randomly.
physiology guy in our lab did a little evoked activity in cortical slide,
using de-inhibition stimulation and calcium imaging. he found some
synchronized activity. of course! cortical networks are well connected. if you
stimulated them somehow, they definitely will fire together.
But there always is a question I wanna ask. Is it meaningful? even you found
fine patterns in evoked network. is it related to real activity ex.learning
and memory?
So to me, I would rather trust more on fMRI study than any others.
I remembered in sfn 2004 there is a poster talking about they found strong
synchronized activity in neonatal cortex during very sharp time window within
several days and then disappeared.

I like your idea that modeling simple networks. I thought about it several
years ago. for simple networks that could be modeled. I also thought about
worms. But it may still be too big to be fully understood.
my favourite one is retina! It is simple and complex. we knew so much about
retina, but we still knew few about it.
