(1) There is two good reports that explained a lot of things.
(a) Katrin Bennhold and Elisabeth Rosenthal, Olympic Torch Goes Out, Briefly
, in Paris. New York Times (www.nytimes.com), April 8, 2008.
("In Paris, at the Trocadéro, opposite the Eiffel Tower, human rights
organizations like Amnesty International and press freedom groups like
Reporters Without Borders protested side by side with representatives of a
banned underground Chinese democracy party, Taiwan nationalists and
proponents of independence for the Uighurs, a Muslim minority in western
China.")
The report is about Paris demonstration. And the photographs you show have "
ARCADE" on the top of a building, suggesting the scene was San Francisco. A
lot of groups have taken advantage of the opportunity (torch relay) to call
attention to their cause.
(b) Jesse McKinley, Olympic Torch Route Changed in San Francisco. New York
Times, Apr. 10, 2008.
A quote:
"As is often the way with protests in San Francisco, the relay also brought
out a variety of activists.
"'We thought this was a great opportunity for exposure,' said Caroline
Nasella, 24, whose organization was In Defense of Animals. She stood holding
a big banner that read 'China: Stop Your Bloody Fur Trade!'
(2) Originally from Taiwan, I must say that I am against "Republic of China"
its national anthem and flag.
