On Apr.1, 2008 BBC Chinese edition had a report titled 港澳民众抢购大米温家
宝保证供应. I read wire reports but failed to understand why. Besides
Chinanews board,I also posted the newsat Taiwan board. (My posting at
Chinanews board has been deleted, because Chinese have focused on Tibet
since Mar. 14 Tibet uprising. However, if you missed my posting, please go
to the Taiwan board to read aboutit.)
Today, Central News Agency (CNA;an officialnews agencyof Taiwan) reports in
an article titled "Rice Price Hikes More Critical Than Oil Price Rises:
Taiwan VP"that Vice Pres.Annette Luof Taiwan said people could cut back on
travel in response to gasoline price hike, but couold not when rice price
webt up. The news suggests rice faces inflationary pressure even in Taiwan.
On Apr.2, there were two wonderful articles, both by reporter Alan Beattie,
in Financial Times (www.ft.com), a London-based commercial newspaper.
(1) Countries rush to restrict trade in basic foods. (In front pageof the
fuirst section.)
This report was gavea global view about rice--and other grains.
It was reported that Argentina, instead of banning exportof agricultural
products, has imposed export taxon those products. (My comment: With similar
effects. Farmers there protest violently.)
(2) Struggle to keep supplies at home. (At page 4 of Dirst section).
This analysis is more aboute conomics.
At last, Voice of America Chinese edition today has a report titled 担心大幅
度涨价香港居民抢购大米.

My comment:
US looks like entering recession. Taiwan will, too. (I don't
know about China, whose data are not reliable.) Mr.Ma Ying-jeou knew
allabout this when campaigning.Still he promised 6% GDP growth rate for four
years. It is impossible,of course, but Taiwanese votersbought it. No wonder
there is an editorial in Liberty Times, a independence-leaning Chinese-
language newspaper in Taiwan. Titlted "誰教選民要輕信?" the editorial
states: "如果選民只因這種人選舉時說了幾句愛台灣的口號就相信他們,那麼他們選
後變臉,只能算是選民活該吧。" In the category of 自由言論--自由談 in the left column of the home page.
No presidential candidates in US have set a GDP goals, because they know there are so many things beyond their control. I admore Pres.Chen Shui-bian. In forty five days, he is gone. In comes Pres. Ma. The sky will fall. But there is nothing I can do about it.
