 tax factors in trading |
Let us denote some symbols for different scenarios. To simplify the discussion, let us define the time frame to be exactly 1 year:
g0 - gains if never sell
g1 - long term gains (sell after a year)
g2 - short term gains (buy and sell all the time)
At what point the expected g1 and g2 will make the trading worth while from a pure tax point of view:
g0 = g1*(1-15%) = g2*(1-30%)
Based on above equilibrium condition, below shows if g0=10% or 50%, the expected g1 and g2 values must be to break even:
g0 100% 10 50
g1 118% 12 59
g2 143% 14 71
So far, $spx gained about 10%

Latest bubbles bursted in some middle-east countries which were fueled by
petro-dollar gains in recent years.
E.g. Saudi Arabia:
2003-2006 from 2000->14000, 7 fold increases in 3 yr! peak PE=57, price to
book 10
Now around 5000. PE=15, price to book around 2

I was very lucky that I escaped the carnage of Oct, 2007 unharmed and a little richer. The reduction of exposure to 50% in July and subsequenty laddering in Aug are the keys to this fortune.
